Emerald Isle Outer Banks North Carolina RV Camping by Andrea Wilson

For our family the Outer Banks may provide the best “RV camping on the beach” destination on the east coast.
We stayed at The Trav-L-Park resort. The RV camping spots are right behind the sand dunes.  I guess I didn’t really know what a sand dune was until this trip. It was the most unusual beach and campground location I have seen. For those of you like me, sand dunes are sort of hills made out of sand that have developed over time from strong winds.  They are permanent landmarks in the beach. The ocean is just a short walk over the sand dunes.
This RV campground has a gazebo that sits on top of the dunes and I was told it has been there for 30 years.  For us the gazebo was a great landmark to get back to the campground from our beach walks.

The sand is clean and the shells are plentiful. You do need to watch for crabs as you walk the beach.  We were fortunate enough to see dolphins following the fishing boats several mornings.  The picture below is of my son and I out early shell searching.  Nothing beats climbing out of the RV grabbing a cup of coffee and being on the beach all in a matter of 2 minutes.  Some other beach trips we have taken, the beach was a shuttle trip away. The location of this RV campground allowed us to take sunrise shell searching walks every morning.  My husband and I also enjoyed sunset walks in the evenings.
Absolutely breath taking!

Close by there are a few very nice putt-putt golf courses as well as a few 18 hole courses.

Emerald Isle is not as commercialized as many areas in the Carolinas, a BIG bonus for us.  If you are looking for a more commercialized area try checking the more popular Hilton Head area.

I think the quaintness of the island and small town feel made the trip especially relaxing.

We were concerned our son might get bored, but the campground had a small arcade and a go cart course for some extra entertainment.  Surprisingly he spent most of his time at the beach.

It is windy there most of the time.  A small hurricane had come thru the night before our arrival and our first day the weather was calm.  The winds picked up early the second day and made for some great body surfing on the ocean.  When I spoke to the locals I learned that high wind is part of everyday life on the island.

If you are considering an east coast beach vacation I recommend you consider the Outer Banks
I’m sure glad we did.
