Ohio Seat Belt Law

As you travel from state to state it is important to know the car seat and seat belt laws.  One of our most asked questions here at the RV Help Desk is about seat belt laws and safety.  This is the best information we can find.  The information on seatbelt laws for Ohio came directly from the Ohio State Highway Patrol web site.

We suggest you contact the state highway patrol in any state you may have questions regarding seat belt laws.

Ohio’s safety belt law requires that all drivers and front seat passengers buckle up even if the vehicle
is equipped with an airbag.

Ohio law now requires all children 4-15 years of age to be properly restrained in a child restraint system or seat belt.

Older children (over eight years or over 4’9”) and adults should ride
restrained by both lap and shoulder belts.
The decision to move a child from a booster seat to
a seat belt should be based on the fit of the seat belt
on the child. Children need to be in a booster seat until
they are at least eight years old, unless over 4’9” tall.
Never allow passengers to ride unrestrained.
• Both the lap and shoulder belts must be used.
• The seat belt should fi t low across the upper thighs and lower hips
and across the center of the shoulder.
• Never allow children to place the shoulder belt behind their back
or under their arm.
• The child’s knees should bend comfortably over the edge of the
seat when the child is sitting with their back against the seat.
• Children must be able to sit with the seat belt fi tting properly for
the complete trip.
• The safest place for ALL children is in the back seat.
